How Do I Meet People When Solo Travelling?

There are sooo many opportunities to meet people when travelling solo. The easiest way to meet people is in your hostel. Everyone who stays at hostels are literally there to meet new people! Simply smile and say "Hi, where are you from?"

We've also met people on trains, busses, planes, walking tours, bar crawls, on the street, in restaurants, on mountain trails, or by asking someone to take a picture of you!

How do I choose what countries and cities to go to?

This is personal preference. Most people have countries and cities on their bucket list that they are dying to visit. No problem if not, that's what we're here for, we'll find out what you're interested in and recommend the perfect spots for you.

Isn't it dangerous?

No. As long as you are sensible it is extremely safe as you are usually constantly around other people. We'll give you tips on how to stay safe wherever you are going.

What if I get lonely?

There will definitely be times when you miss your family and friends back home. But this is part of the self development and it's important to be able to spend time with yourself and your inner demons!!! Anyway, your new travel friends will make you feel immediately at home!

What if I don't end up liking it?

This is extremely rare, most people that have done any solo travelling have thoroughly enjoyed it and become hooked on it. It could be a good idea to do a solo weekend trip in your own country before committing to weeks or months of Solo Travel around Europe :) Or just dive right in head first.

What are Hostels like to stay in?

Hostels are some of the best places you can stay. The variety of people that stay and work there always mean you will have different personalities to talk to and guarantees a great time! Dorm sizes usually range from 4-18 people and we think the best size is between 8-10 people. Female only dorms are usually in every hostel as well! There are party hostels and also more relaxed hostels, we usually book a mixture so you have time to rest and recover. If you would like solely party hostels or solely chill hostels we can definitely set this up too.

Do I need to speak the local language?

The locals love it when you can speak a few basic words of their beautiful languages and it is a sign of respect if you at least make an attempt. But this is definitely not necessary for most countries you visit and you can get away with speaking English pretty much everywhere.

How much money do I need?

This all depends on where you go, what you want to do, and how long you want to go for. Some hostels in Eastern Europe cost as little as $8 a night, others in Western Europe could be $60-$100 a night but overall Hostels are extremely budget friendly if booked carefully. Obviously the big cities also cost more for food, drinks, and entertainment. A good budget is around US$900 a week but you can definitely live on far less than this, and can definitely spend far more if you're wanting to do lots of activities.

How long should I go for?

The longer the better! Just kidding, it all depends on how far you can make your money go and how much vacation time you have from your job or from your studies.

What do I pack in my bag and how big should it be?

We will send a whole list of what we recommend bringing when you book with us. But if you will be catching flights and only want a carry on bag then a backpack which is less than 45litres should do the job. We are big fans of backpacks when travelling in summer as they offer plentiful space especially when washing clothes weekly :) Understandably some people like to pack a bit heavier (especially the ladies) so a wheeled bag may be most suitable for you.

Do I need to tip?

Depends on what countries you are going to. Tipping is not expected in pretty much all countries in Europe but if you receive great service then a tip is definitely welcomed. Some countries also add a service charge to the bill when you are sitting in at restaurants.

Are there female only dorms?

Yes, the majority of Hostels offer female only dorms. All hostels have mixed dorm options.

What if I don't drink alcohol?

Fantastic, you won't get hungover so you can spend more time exploring! A lot of hostels do offer drinking based activities such as pub crawls but you definitely don't need to attend these. We can help book hostels that don't focus on drinking (or that do focus on drinking!).

What if I get sick?

If you are going away for several weeks it is likely you will contract a cold or flu as you are around lots of new people and new places. The pharmacies throughout Europe are extremely helpful and have all the medication you will need. If you get sick take a few days off to rest and recuperate and don't push your body too hard as it will then take longer to recover. It is imperative to stay hydrated every day and ensure you don't spend all day in the sun if you're not used to it.
